New York Police Department is the preeminent law enforcement organization of New York City. Their officers are only ever seen wearing full body armor with a full face helmet, similar in style to the helmet worn in the 1987 movie Robocop, and bearing an unusual weapon that appears to be a cross between a rifle and a pistol; the weapon is holstered in plain sight on the officer's shoulder.

The official tagline of the NYPD appears to be "Thank you for your cooperation," spoken in dolorous tones, but the original response that was recorded to film was "Thank you for your help." As a nod to the 1987 sci-fi film Robocop, that line was re-dubbed in post-production and released in its final form, replacing 'help' with 'cooperation'.
The airborne police cruisers have an array of built-in blasters that use an automatic targeting system. This is demonstrated in the scene where Korben is fleeing the police, and his taxi notifies him he is being targeted by a weapons system.
